Wolves skipper Danny Batth's Big Issue

"You never know what roll of the dice you're going to get in life. If you're in a fortunate position you should help others."

Wolves skipper Danny Batth takes his community responsibilities seriously.

And this weekend he's going the extra mile to raise the plight of homelessness.

Batth will be selling copies of the Big Issue outside the Wolves club shop in Dudley Street from 1-3pm on Saturday.

While footballers can often be accused of getting embroiled in cheap PR stunts, the same cannot be said in this case, as the 25-year-old from Brierley Hill explained.

"Approaching Christmas I thought to myself, 'what can I do to help?'" Batth told the Express & Star.

"Coming into Wolverhampton to train every day you see homeless people who aren't spending Christmas with their families.

"The Big Issue popped up and it seemed like a good opportunity to raise awareness.

"It's something I've always taken an interest in. I think people wrongly stereotype those who sell the Big Issue, thinking they must have a drug problem or something, but they might have just lost their job at the wrong time."

Batth, who scored Wolves' winning goal at Rotherham last weekend and hopes to lead the team to another victory when they take on Nottingham Forest at Molineux tomorrow night, will sign copies of the magazine, and talk to people about the problem of homelessness, not just in Wolverhampton but across the country.

Money raised from the day will go directly to vendors who sell the magazine in Wolverhampton.

Batth added: "These people are just trying to get back on their feet.

"It's got to be so tough at this time of year - you see people buying presents for their loved ones and you're living on the streets.

"As a footballer I'm in a privileged position and it's good to stay in touch with reality and make sure you're part of the real world.

"Everyone's had a point in life when they've needed a hand. Hopefully something like this makes a small difference."
