Doreen Humpage, 51, from Birmingham, worked independently as a carer for an 87-year-old woman, who following a fall needed help with cooking, cleaning and couldn't leave the house on her own.

But Humpage used her position to steal her debit card and regularly withdrew large amounts of cash.

Between April and May 2014 CCTV showed Humpage withdraw cash from a cash machine on Tyburn Road. Investigations revealed that the withdrawals were taken from the pensioner's account without her consent.

The theft was discovered after police were alerted to Humpage and after researching her financial background found she was in thousands of pounds of debt.

Humpage, of Sumburgh Croft, Castle Vale, was jailed for fraud by false representation at Birmingham Crown Court earlier this month and sentenced to 10 months in prison.

Pc Stacey Parsons, from Sutton Coldfield police station, said: "Humpage was greedy, although she was in debt there is no evidence to suggest that she used the cash to try to pay her debts off. In fact her debts continued to mount after the thefts and we believe that Humpage used the cash to fund spending sprees.

"When we searched her house we found expensive electrical items and wardrobes full of brand new clothes, with the majority still having the price tags attached.

"The motive is clear, Humpage was greedy, she used her position to steal from an elderly lady who trusted her, who relied on her."
