Paramedics were called to Greets Green Social Club, Whitehall Road, at around 5.15am where the 69-year-old widower, from Tipton, was found unconscious.

His head injuries were so severe ambulance crews believed he had been hit by a car.

But West Midlands Police have now confirmed the victim was assaulted.

CCTV footage has been released of the suspected attacker running away from the scene.

Detective Sergeant Andy Robinson, from West Midlands Police, said: "The man's injuries were so severe that the ambulance service initially believed that he had been hit by a car.

"Our inquiries quickly found that he had in fact been assaulted.

"CCTV footage shows the pair walk out of Grout Street onto Whitehall Road, there is a brief conversation and then the assault takes place.

"The motive remains unclear but we're working hard to identify the man ran off with his stripped top soaked with blood. There is a suggestion that he then drove away in a light coloured van."

Police said the victim had left his home early to enjoy a day out. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
