Others at the Wolverhampton Racecourse event said what would normally be a 10 minute journey to the venue had taken them more than a hour due to queues.

One woman told the Express & Star it had taken an hour to get to the site from the Stafford Road - a journey she said would normally take 10 minutes.

Another man said:"I've been waiting an hour to get off the car park. I definitely won't come back next year.

While another woman said: "Next year we'll go somewhere else. It's been horrendous, people shouting abuse at each other and trying to squeeze past each other."

Meanwhile, the first major firework displays in Sandwell have now been held since three people were injured by a firework at an event last year.

Thousands of families turned out for the annual bonfire at Dartmouth Park, in West Bromwich, last night.

But there was some disruption at the event after a gang of yobs threw three rockets on the main pathway near to the cenotaph before running out of the park.

Witness Adam Williams, of Tividale, said one of the fireworks had gone near a child's pram but quick thinking by the youngster's father had stopped the situation being more serious.

He said no-one had been hurt but it had been an upsetting experience for youngsters and their parents.

Events were also held at Victoria Park, Smethwick, while tonight a display was due to take place in Jubilee Park, Tipton.

At the Dartmouth Park event, the bonfire was lit at 6.30pm with huge crowds gathering from when the event opened at 5.30pm.

The fireworks display, which prompted huge cheers from the crowd, started at around 7.45pm.

Wolverhampton's display was also held at Wolverhampton Racecourse for the first time after being moved from West Park.
