850 sign petition to save Wolverhampton activity centre in one day
A petition launched to save a former respite care unit turned activity centre has garnered 850 signatures in its first day.
Council bosses have earmarked Warstones Resource Centre for closure after plans to convert it into a library and community centre fell through last year.
The centre, off Warstones Gardens, is currently used for art and IT classes.
Bill Baugh, who runs painting sessions at the centre and launched the petition to save it, said: "The general public are very concerned about the future of the centre and that has come through with the response to the petition.
"There are no other suitable community buildings around here and there is a strong feeling that is this goes, we will have nowhere else to go."
The centre was previously day care centre for elderly people fitted with respite and rehabilitation facilities, although that was shut down in 2012 following council concerns about low usage.
At the time a petition launched to save it was signed by more than 9,000 people.
To sign the petition, which is in paper format only, visit the centre or call Bill Baugh on 01902 763333 for more details.
