The 20-year-old, from Sandwell, attended the town's police station on Monday just hours after officers released CCTV images from the attack.

Police said the attack on the teenagers had happened between 10pm and 11.15pm on September 7 on a path leading to Trinity Way tram station.

West Midlands Police's lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Sally Holmes described the incident:

"The friends waited for their 74 bus at the stop opposite the Desi Junction bar on High Street. As they waited, a man appeared and started talking to them.

"He then picked-up one of the girls, put her over his shoulder and carried her down the High Street towards Trinity Road North before taking the path leading to the Trinity Way tram stop.

"Her friend followed the man as he carried the other girl. On the pathway both girls were sexually assaulted."

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Deb Edmonds confirmed the man had been bailed to a date in November under strict conditions.

Detectives continue to investigate and anyone with information which may help should call 101.
