In pictures and video: Rain fails to dampen Willenhall Carnival fun

Rain did its best to stop play, but hundreds still turned out with their umbrellas for Willenhall Carnival.

Plans for the event had to be ripped up due to the wet weather this weekend, but many of the attractions were able to go ahead to the delight of around 500 visitors.

Organiser Sharon Green said: "We were quite concerned about our main act – an aerial display team and what they were going to be able to do. So we decided to put them on standby as soon as there was a clearing in the weather we threw them on.

"Fortunately they managed to do two acts which were enjoyed by those watching.

"Obviously because of the extremely wet weather we had a lot less people than have attended in previous years. I would like to say a big thank you to those who did brave it and came and supported the carnival."

The annual extravaganza, which dates back to the 1920s, was opened at Willenhall Memorial Park on Saturday by the Mayor of Walsall, Angela Underhill.

Highlights included the usual crowning of the carnival royalty and a playful dog competition with categories including the dog 'judges would most like to take home' and the dog with the waggiest tail.

Sharon has been running the event for 17 years and says the rain will not put her off holding the carnival.

She added: "I am already looking ahead to next year's.

"We have already set a date of June 11 and I would urge anyone interested in getting involved to get in touch."
