Reginald Stocking was left lying in the street with bleeding in his brain, a broken nose, two smashed eye sockets, and two chips in his skull, after he tried to stop a thief taking his car.

On Sunday, May 17, a car similar to the 78-year-old's will be driven along the route Mr Stocking took on Sunday, May 10.

The carjacking took place outside Mr Stocking's home as he was moving his car into a drive when a man, who is believed to have been lying in wait, jumped into the vehicle as the victim opened a gate.

The grandfather-of-three's tried to stop the thief but was thrown against a wall in the process.

The retired engineer was returning to his home in Chapel Street after picking his wife Sylvia up from bingo when the incident happened.

The incident occurred at around 9.20pm.

Police officers will also be handing out flyers around Chapel Street while the reconstruction takes place.

Detective Inspector Pete Rowe, from Sandwell Police investigation team, said: "It is really important to Mr Stocking's family - and us - that we find whoever did this.

"It is therefore vitally important that we trace the stolen Peugeot and urge people to keep an eye out for it in the local area.

"To help jog people's memory, we will be staging a reconstruction at the scene on Sunday 17 May.

"Officers will be handing out leaflets and speaking to people in the area at the same time the incident happened to see if anyone remembers anything.

"We will also have a similar vehicle driving the route our offender did before the attack and the escape route we believe he took.

"It is likely that the stolen vehicle will have some damage to the front and rear end as it collided with the victim and a wall before driving off."

The offender is believed to be a man who is over 6ft tall and of stocky build, who was seen lurking around the area near the junction of Chapel Street and Old Meeting Street at around 9pm.
