Crackdown on Cannock rogue recyclers
Council bosses in Cannock are launching a 12-month crackdown on people putting the wrong items in recycling bins.
A campaign will see messages displayed on buses and in supermarkets as rogue recyclers are targeted.
Chiefs say they lose money by items being put in the wrong bins.
The year-long campaign will also include posts on social media and adverts on council cars. A recent refuse collection at the recycling plant in Aldridge saw more than seven tons of recycling materials rejected as it contained food and garden waste. The load had to be disposed of via landfill.
The council's head of housing and waste management, Ian Tennant said: "Residents in the district are recycling more.
"However contamination, where householders put wrong or unacceptable materials in the blue and brown bins is on the increase. This can cost council tax payers money."
"We are asking residents to work with us and to understand the importance of putting the right item in the right bin."
Cannock has one of the highest recycling rates in Staffordshire and performs better than its neighbouring Black Country councils, with around 50 per cent on its waste recycled.
