Trio attacked Dudley father with Samurai sword, hammer and baseball bat, court told
A gang wielding a samurai sword, hammer and baseball bat attacked a father outside his Dudley home, leaving him with serious head and brain injuries, a court heard.
Kasim Ali and two 17-year-old boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are accused of attempting to murder 37-year-old Tariq Mahmood. Mr Mahmood had to have a large part of his skull removed after the ordeal.
The trio are also accused of attacking his 19-year-old stepson Ajmal Choudhary in the assault in Hillcrest Road, Kates Hill, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday. He was left with less serious injuries.
Mr Robert Price, prosecuting, said there had been a dispute between Mr Choudhary and one of the youths on social media website Instagram a couple of weeks before.
The jury was told Mr Mahmood's wife, Shabana Choudhary, saw the defendants in a black Vauxhall Vectra when she went to collect her husband from work at the Spar in Buffery Road on August 1 last year.
Mr Price said she had noticed the car following her and it pulled up beside her when she stopped at the shop.
He said Ali had asked where her son was and she told him he was at home and invited them to the family home.
Mr Price said Mr Mahmood went into the house to get his stepson, thinking they were friends, before Ali was heard to say 'get the machete' and was seen with a samurai sword.
He said one of the teenagers armed with a baseball bat then got out of the car and swung it in the direction of Mr Choudhary, as his stepfather tried to intervene.
The court was told that Ali started to punch Mr Choudhary while the youth with the bat repeatedly struck Mr Mahmood to the upper body. Mrs Choudhary called 999 and the group fled.
Mr Price said: "Tariq Mahmood was left in the middle of the road motionless in a pool of his own blood." Residents and onlookers saw men armed with a baseball bat and hammer. Mr Mahmood was taken to hospital for brain surgery.
The court heard the group were arrested later that month.
Mr Price said: "The prosecution's case is these three defendants armed themselves with lethal weapons and visited the home address of Tariq Mahmood and the other members of his family."
Giving evidence, Mr Choudhary said he had known two of the defendants, but did not know Ali that well. He said he had seen Ali with a knife which looked like a samurai sword. Ali, aged 20, of Aston Road, Dudley, and the two teenagers all deny attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent and assault causing actual bodily harm.
The trial continues.
