Plan to extend Wolverhampton city centre hotel to cope with demand
Plans to extend a hotel in the centre of Wolverhampton have been submitted to the city council, to cope with an increased demand for rooms.
Bosses want to create 20 new bedrooms at the Premier Inn in Broad Gauge Way, opposite the railway station.
They plan to build a five storey extension to the existing hotel, on what is now a car park and footpath.
The expansion would take the total number or rooms at the hotel to 109.
Bosses say the extension will create more jobs - although they have not given a figure.
A report detailing the plans says the hotel's owner, Whitbread, 'has recognised a requirement for additional rooms in the area'.
It also states the hotel 'is one of the group's best performing facilities in the region', as measured by occupancy and turn-away data.
The existing car park currently includes126 spaces and the proposed extension would lead to the loss of eight car parking spaces - three directly under the proposed extension and five where the road to the rear of the hotel will be widened.
The Whitbread group is looking to create more than 700 beds a year across its hotels by expanding existing hotels and building new ones.
