The ring road, Broadway, Sutton Road and the town centre are among those being looked at. Junction improvements, better crossings and road markings are being considered by councilchiefs subject to securing funding and firm designs being drawn up.

It comes as there have been scores of accidents in some parts of the borough during the last three years.

Pedestrian facilities and junction improvements are being looked at on the Ring Road along the Littleton Street stretch as part of a £270,000 scheme. There have been 31 collisions in the area between October 2011-2014.

Highways chiefs are also putting together proposals for 20mph zones in the town centre and upgrading pedestrian links under a £396,000 scheme.

Furthermore, the council are considering warning signs and new pedestrian refuge at Broadway West, near West Bromwich Street and crossing build outs on Sutton Road under designs worth more than £150,000.

Transport chief, councillor Lee Jeavons said: "The council is working towards a Town Centre Area action plan, which amongst other things, considers the movement of pedestrians and traffic around the town."

It comes as roads across the borough are already lined up for improvements.

Around £60 million is being pumped into the transformation of the M6 junction 10 island.

Work is not expected to start until 2017.
