Officers confirmed that a small number of dead fish were discovered in the balancing pool at Norton Canes upstream from Kingswood Lake.

High oxygen levels were found in the water but the cause is not yet known.

A spokeswoman from the Environment Agency said the pollution had been contained in the pool and that officers would continue to monitor the situation.

Staffordshire County Council environment chief, Mark Winnington, said the council was alerted to the issue on Saturday. He said: "We take incidents like this very seriously and have also been working very closely with the Environment Agency to ensure this issue has only affected water in the balancing pool and not the water quality in Kingswood Lake itself."
