A fire sparked by a cannabis factory created in a Bearwood home has prompted a police investigation today.

Firefighters were called to tackle the blaze at the property in Gladys Road, off Bearwood Road in the early hours.

A team of 15 firefighters from three stations arrived and called for police after discovering the drug operation.

In total 37 cannabis plants were recovered from inside the premises which suffered damage in the blaze at 1am.

Crews from Smethwick, Ladywood and Woodgate Valley were called to tackle the fire in the basement.

The basement was severely damaged by the flames.

West Midlands Police's cannabis disposal team is leading the investigation. No one has been arrested at this stage.
