Clean Power withdrew its planning application for the facility which would have been built on land off Moor Street.

It was up for consideration at Dudley Council's development control committee meeting last night.

The plan was strongly opposed by a community campaign group called Say No To Waste. Almost 900 letters of objection were sent into the council.

Brierley Hill ward Councillor Rachel Harris was to speak at last night's meeting against the planning application.

She said: "I can't speculate why it has been withdrawn. It is a Christmas present to the community, hopefully without a string in its tail."

The planning application said the plant would turn 195,000 tons of waste into electricity each year.

Clean Power was unavailable for comment.
