The Albion striker, who earned his first full England call-up this month, was stopped in Cheshire for travelling at 'high speed' on the M6 motorway in the early hours of the morning.

And when officers spoke to Berahino, he was then arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The 21-year-old was interviewed and bailed and must go back to a police station to speak again with officers in December following his arrest near Lymm last month.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: "At around 03.39am on the morning of Wednesday, October 22, a patrol stopped a car travelling at high speed southbound on the M6 near J20.

"A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, interviewed, and was subsequently bailed and is due to appear at a Cheshire custody suite early in December."

Berahino has been the star of the Baggies' season so far with eight goals in all competitions including seven in the Premier League.

He also scored three times to help England Under-21s qualify for the European Championship finals next summer, earning a call-up for the full England side for their recent games against Slovenia and Scotland.

He was an unused substitute in both matches, denying him the chance to become Albion's first outfield England international for 30 years.

Berahino escaped his war-torn African homeland of Burundi at the age of 10 to start a new life with his refugee mother, Liliane, in Birmingham.

He joined Albion's academy at the age of 12 and burst into the first team last season.

He signed a new contract in January, taking his wages from £850-per-week to around £14,000, and he is currently in talks over another improved deal.
