Girl, 11, dies after cardiac arrest on Cannock Chase
An 11 year-old girl died after suffering a cardiac arrest while out cycling on Cannock Chase.
A member of the public started CPR on the youngster ahead of paramedics arriving on the scene.
She was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital but despite on board treatment they were unable to revive her.
Paramedics were called to Marquis Drive, near to the Visitor Centre, at just after 10.10am on Sunday.
A statement from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Crews arrived to find a girl in cardiac arrest after it is believed she suffered a medical incident while riding her bicycle.
"A bystander had already started CPR which crews then continued before moving the patient to the air ambulance.
"She was then airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital with emergency medical treatment continuing en-route.
"Unfortunately, shortly after her arrival at the hospital, it became apparent that nothing more could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene."
Detective Inspector Becky Cawkwell, from Staffordshire Police, said they were currently supporting the family and a report was being prepared for the coroner.
"This is a very tragic and said incident," she said. "There are no suspicious circumstances."
A statement from the Forestry Commission, which has responsibility for Cannock Chase Forest: "On the morning of Sunday, Forestry Commission staff were made aware of a medical incident on one of Cannock Chase's forest roads involving a young girl.
"The emergency services attended and air lifted the girl to hospital. We have been made aware that sadly the girl has since died. Our thoughts are with her family."
