The accident happened at the junction of Tollhouse Way and Rolfe Street, in Smethwick, at around 1.30pm.

First to arrive on scene was a community paramedic who was driving nearby in the aftermath of the accident.

The Midlands Air Ambulance was also sent initially to help the pedestrian, a man believed to be aged in his 70s.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said the man was immobilised on a spinal board before he was taken by road to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

"Initially thought to have been knocked unconscious, his condition was described as improving en-route to the hospital," he added.
