Arfon Owen was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting his terrified victims - aged under 13 at the time of the offences, which span back 38 years.

In July he was convicted of 11 counts of rape and eight of indecent assault following a week long trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

The court heard he committed the offences between 1976 and 1992 while living in Sheldon, Birmingham and Aberystwyth, Wales.

His twisted crimes only came to light in 2012 when his two victims finally found the courage to come forward and report the sickening abuse they had suffered.

On Friday the pensioner was jailed for 20 years after he appeared via-video link from prison due to ill health.

After the case Detective Constable Vicky Kelleher, from West Midlands Police, said: "Owen's crimes came to light in early 2012 when his two victims found the courage to report the appalling abuse he had inflicted upon them.

"He steadfastly denied his guilt, so it was down to the brave testimonies of the girls which secured his conviction and saw him sentenced to a very lengthy jail term.

"I hope this serves to help anyone else who may find themselves in a similar situation to have the courage to come forward and report abuse.

"We have a range of support services available from the police and a raft of other agencies.

"We have specially trained and experienced officers who can offer practical advice and support in all aspects of sexual and domestic abuse."

Owen was also found not guilty of one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13.

He has lived in Talybont, North Wales since the early 90's but is originally from Sheldon.
