Gas scare after car hits Tipton sheltered housing building
[gallery order="DESC" columns="4"] A car hit an outbuilding to a sheltered housing scheme inTipton, causing damage to the brick work and sparking fears of a gas leak.
The vehicle reversed into the storage building outside Exon Court, in Robert Road, on Friday evening at about 6pm, before driving away.
Emergency services were called and an engineer from National Grid attended to ensure gas pipes in the building were not leaking.
Fire crews then inspected the structure of the building, before leaving at about 8pm.
Tipton Watch Commander Dave Smith said a gas leak would have caused an evacuation of the 20 sheltered housing homes.
He said: "When we first arrived, it looked like it was worse than it was. We believed there could have been a gas leak and an engineer was called out.
"Luckily there was not a leak and we were able to check over the building."
The building, which measured 10 ft by 15 ft, contained gas meters and storage items. Mr Smith said the doors had been smashed in and brick work damaged.
He said: "It will need to be replaced."
