The 3rd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Staffords) is kicking off its homecoming tour with around 250 soldiers marching through the town centre.

The parade on June 23 will mark their return from duty in Afghanistan.

Stafford Borough Council is helping to organise the event with the march getting under way at 11am before the salute is taken in the Market Square by the mayor, Councillor Ray Sutherland. One of his chosen charities this year is the local branch of SSAFA, a charity which provides support for the forces and their families. Councillor Sutherland said: "Our local community have an enormous affection for our brave servicemen and women and have always showed their appreciation in great numbers when they have marched through the town.

"I am sure this parade will be just as well received and I hope people will make time to come out and applaud the Staffords and give thanks for their safe return as well as remember those who have lost their lives serving their country."
