Long delays on M6 after series of smashes

Motorway drivers were suffering from long delays on the M6 this afternoon after a series of crashes caused tailbacks.

A crash involving a lorry and one other vehicle caused two lanes of the motorway between going southbound from junction 12 near Gailey towards junction 11 at Essington.

Drivers were having to sit through delays of up to an hour as tailbacks stretched all the way to junction 14 for Stafford.

This morning, one lane was closed at junction 10 due to an accident , but police and Highways Agency officers attended the scene and traffic began running smoothly again at around 12pm.

And commuters on the metro were also suffering from delays after a tram failure during rush hour.

Passengers between Wolverhampton and Birmingham Snow Hill were diverted to bus services and London Midland trains after the fault at 7am.

Normal services resumed at 9am.

No injuries were reported and the ambulance service did not attend.
