A row of shops will be revamped to remove a shelter that has become a meeting point for gangs and attract new businesses to the empty units under new plans.

The eight shop fronts - including a chemists and grocers - will be extended in Cresswell Crescent, Mossley under proposals put forward to Walsall Council.

It comes as concerns are raised over applications for takeaways in two of the three empty premises.

Residents are worried about an increase in litter and traffic, and say they would prefer shops or independent businesses to open.

The existing shops will be fitted with new doors and windows, while shop fronts will be brough forward to be in line with concrete columns at the side.

The area in front of the shops will also be resurfaced, and other landscaping is also planned.

Bloxwich West ward councillor Patti Susan Lane said residents had been calling for the revamp for years but were worried about the prospect of two takeaways opening.

She said: "This work is needed as the shops do need some work. I was at a residents' association meeting earlier this week and the issue came up again.

"They want the existing shops such as the chemists to be maintained as they are well valued in the area but we are concerned about the takeways plans."

The revamp plans by SEB Properties Ltd are set to be considered by council bosses in the coming weeks.

Ward councillor Louise Harrison said: "I welcome the alterations to the shops, bringing the fronts of the shops out into line with the concrete columns will get rid of the overhang which at the moment creates the perfect shelter for gangs to hang out under.

"The shops on Cresswell Crescent do look run down and would certainly benefit from a face lift. "After a recent survey I undertook on the estate I had meetings with the new owner of the shops to persuade them to make improvements and control the problems outside the shops.

"The improved shops would enhance the gateway to the Mossley estate and may help cut back on anti-social behaviour."
