Former Aston Villa footballer Ashley Young handed driving ban for speeding on M6 Toll
England footballer Ashley Young was hit with a six-month ban for speeding on the M6 Toll - the second time in two months he was caught driving too fast.
The Manchester United star was caught driving his £60,000 Range Rover Vogue at 71mph in a 50mph zone by a variable speed camera on the M6 Toll last March. Just two months earlier he was clocked at 101mph on the M62. Yesterday Young was banned from driving for six months and ordered to pay a total of £3,535.
Bizarrely, the millionaire winger was unable to pay the fine yesterday because he had forgotten his wallet.
Leamington Spa Magistrates Court heard Young already had nine points on his licence after he was caught doing 101mph on the M62 in West Yorkshire in January 2013. The court heard Young received six points for that incident and three points for another unspecified offence in 2011.
The 28-year-old winger, who wore a black suit, white shirt and black tie, spoke only to confirm his name during the 10-minute hearing. He had already pleaded guilty through his solicitor at a previous hearing which had to be adjourned when he failed to turn up because he was training with Manchester United.
Chairman of the bench Paul Tasker said: "For the offence of speeding you will be fined a sum of £3,000, you will have to pay £405 costs and a victim surcharge of £135.
"You will also have four points added to your licence, this means you will have 13 points on your driving licence. As such you will face a mandatory ban under totting up. We have not accepted the position of you advocate, you will be disqualified for a period of six months from driving a motor vehicle."
"This means you must not drive a motor vehicle anywhere in public, if you do you will be committing an offence."
Prosecutor Naila Iqbal told the court: "On March 7 last year at 10am Mr Young was travelling in his Range Rover Vogue on the M6 Toll at Rugby travelling south toward the M42.
"The speed limit at the time was 50mph, Mr Young was recorded at 71mph."
"Unfortunately he has not got his driving licence today as he has forgotten his wallet."
Young refused to comment outside court.
