Police are now hunting two men for the assault, which has left the victim with serious injuries and recovering in hospital.

Officers are also hoping to speak to the driver of a white van who helped the victim after the attack, as they could have vital information to help with the case.

The assault happened as the victim stood waiting for a bus near Hall Green Care Home on Hall Green Road, Hill Top in West Bromwich at around 4.45am on Monday. He was punched in the head by two offenders.

The van driver and another passing motorist stopped to help and immediately called the emergency services, but the driver of the van did not stay and speak to police.

Detective Sergeant Indi Basra is reviewing CCTV footage in the area in a bid to identify the offenders and is appealing for the driver or anyone else who may have seen what happened to call him.

He said: "This was a particularly brutal attack which has left a man with a nasty head injury, a cut to his face and a fractured cheekbone. What's more, it was completely unprovoked.

"We believe the offenders were two men - one was black, the other was white, and one was wearing a hoody.

"The victim is struggling to remember any more specific details at the moment which is why the van driver could hold crucial information."
