More time to quiz Stafford road death suspect
Police were today continuing to question a 22-year-old man arrested in connection with the death of a pensioner who was found dead in a road on Christmas Day.
The deceased, named locally as Jim Smith, was in his 80s, and his body was discovered in the road at the junction of Shakespeare Road and Wordsworth Avenue in Stafford at 12.50am on Wednesday morning.
Police applied to magistrates for more time to question the suspect and have been granted an extension which will run out this evening.
A post-mortem was taking place today with police not expecting to be able to confirm the name of the man who died until later.
The family of the elderly man is being supported by specially trained officers.
Police want anyone who spotted a white van in the area, or saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact them.
The 22-year-old man, a motorist, is being held on suspicion of being unfit to drive through either drink or drugs in connection with the death, police said.
