Man found dead in Stafford street is named
A pensioner found dead in the road on Christmas Day in Stafford has been named locally as Jim Smith, who was in his 80s.
A 22-year-old man arrested in connection with the death remained in police custody today.
The body was discovered in the road at the junction of Shakespeare Road and Wordsworth Avenue in Highfields at 12.50am on Christmas morning.
Brenda Shirley, resident coordinator at Shakespeare Complex where Mr Smith lived, was woken by detectives at 4.30am yesterday, alerting her to Mr Smith's death.
"He was a very nice gentleman, people all got on with him. We are all in shock," she said.
Police arrested a the man on suspicion of being unfit to drive through either drink or drugs.
A spokesman said: "The 22-year-old man arrested in connection with this incident remains in police custody."
