Tributes to doctor who died hours after car crash
The family of a doctor who died in a tragic road accident today paid tribute to their "much loved" wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.
Dr Elizabeth Pope, 38, who died after her car overturned on a road in Claverley, near Bridgnorth, was "a dedicated, respected and much-loved GP", said a family statement.
She died just hours after declining hospital treatment following the crash on Wednesday and had appeared "relatively uninjured" but passed away at her home in Claverley within two hours.
Despite being diagnosed with a hole in the heart six years ago and later with thyroid cancer, which saw the removal of her thyroid gland, she continued to play hockey, ride her horse and tend to her garden with her husband, Trevor.
Her tireless work also saw her volunteer during the London 2012 Olympic Games, where she was appointed to the Olympic Village GP group and helped many athletes and others with the medical issues.
Her family said her sudden death "had left the world a much darker place".
They said: "We are so very grateful we have been able to share in the life of this lovely, happy and energetic person who lit up our world, who loved us and whom we love. In the depth of our grieving, we take comfort from the fact that Liz knew the truth of the Gospel message that Jesus is the light of our world.
"As we acknowledge with her death a light has gone out in our world, we also know for Liz the true light is still shining and the darkness has not extinguished it. May Liz rest in peace and rise in glory."
Dr Pope, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, was an enthusiastic sportswoman, a devoted Christian and a loving and much-loved wife, daughter, sister, aunty and friend.
She studied medicine at Leicester University and after graduating married Trevor Pope, from Bridgnorth, and lived in Tasley. Her career saw her take up the post of house officer and then senior house officer at Shrewsbury Royal Infirmary before moving to the outskirts of Yeovil in Somerset where she worked as a GP.
She moved back to Shropshire seven years ago and became a GP partner in the Three Villages Medical Practice in the Amblecote and Wollaston areas of Stourbridge. Dr Pope was also a member of the Care Commissioning Group for the area and was on a number of groups and committees dedicated to improving health provision there and in the wider country.
Leave your tributes to Dr Elizabeth Pope in the comments below. Please do not discuss the incident.
