The typhoon that ripped through the Philippines has made a Stafford diving instructor even more determined to help others left struggling to survive – despite her own house being badly damaged.

Kelly Marklove, of Great Haywood, has organised an aid effort to help hundreds of people without food or shelter on the island of Malapascua.

The 28-year-old has lived there since March while she teaches diving. A group of more than 10 colleagues from the Evolution Diving firm were heading back to the island today to hand out food, clothes and water.

Before the storm hit, Miss Marklove had already warned her worried parents Peter, 60, and Sue, 53, that she may be out of contact for a few days.

But they did not hear anything until Sunday, when she sent them a brief message on Facebook. They then had to wait again until Tuesday but were relieved to hear she is safe.
