Motorists are continuing to flout the 50mph speed restrictions, close to where work is being carried out for the multi-million pound i54 business park.

Another 600 drivers have been caught in the last two months, after the Express & Star reported 6,400 had been fined between May and August.

Council chiefs today said many drivers mistakenly believe the average speed cameras along the route do not work.

The new campaign, which uses the slogan 'Kill your speed, not the workforce', is being used to remind drivers the speed limit is in place.

The poster campaign will run around the district, including at service stations and garages close to the M54 at junction 2.

Work is being carried out there to improve access to the new business park, which will be home to Jaguar Land Rover and 1,400 new jobs.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for infrastructure, said: "Despite raising awareness both in local press and along the stretch of motorway itself, it seems too many people are still exceeding the speed limit.

"People may think the cameras don't work or that they aren't going to get caught.

"This is certainly not the case."

He said the 50 mph speed limit as in place to protect those working at the site.

"It is also to protect motorists along a stretch of the motorway where the lanes have been narrowed and there is no hard shoulder," he added.

"Even when the workforce isn't visible on the roadside it is still essential that motorists stick to the speed limit for their own safety."

They were issued with fines ranging between £60 and £100.

Since then, the total has risen to almost 7,000.

Council bosses say the 50 mph zone only adds a further 40 seconds to journey times.
