Inflatable dogs, rabbits and mermaids fought for attention during the attempt at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall. A total of 239 participants all produced a balloon structure within the same five-minute period, a feat which organisers believe has never previously been attempted.

The potential record breakers were gathered as part of the tenth annual Kidology UK convention for children's entertainers.

Event organiser Alec Powell, from West Bromwich, said: "The only similar records we could find involved solo attempts, so this may well be the first time a large gathering of people have tried it."

Mr Powell said they now face an anxious wait to see if the record will be verified.
