The TV legend, known to millions as the loveable Boycie in Only Fools and Horses, praised the charity as he helped celebrate the grand opening of the HQ.

The base has moved from Brierley Hill to Dudley Road in nearby Lye.

"I live in rural Herefordshire and often go out to the picturesque Long Mynd. I would like to think if I got into trouble they would be there to help," the TV star said.

"Their ability to pin-point a casualty is amazing and has undoubtedly saved countless lives," he added.

Sam Aston, nine, was left with more than six breaks and an open fracture to his leg after being hit by a car right outside his home in Saltwells, Dudley last summer.

"Me and my husband were out in the back garden at the time and all we heard was the screeching of brakes with a loud bang. We knew something had happened," said his mother Jo, 39.

After being initially treated at the scene, Sam was flown to Birmingham Children's Hospital where he underwent surgery to reconstruct his leg.

Seven months later and after two more surgeries the pupil of Dudley Wood Primary School was upon his feet walking unaided and more than a year on wanted to show his gratitude by being there while the ribbon was cut.

Sam said: "The helicopter trip was really exciting even though I was in a lot of pain. The helicopter crew that looked after me are my heroes."
