Elaine Shail contacted Guy Bailey after her husband Alan, aged 76, was left unable to walk following an operation at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke in 2008.

But Mr Bailey, the director of Reward Litigation Solicitors in Birmingham, failed to bring the case to the courts within the three-year time limit.

Mrs Shail, 72, then contacted the Legal Ombudsman who took the case against Mr Bailey to court. He was found in contempt of court and hit with a fine of £5,000.
