There has been a number of deaths across the country in recent weeks after people have got into trouble while swimming in open water including 20-year-old Damian Southall from Wombourne who died in the River Severn, in Bridgnorth, last month.

Firefighters say they were called out to reports of a fire in Wood Lane at around 7pm, but upon arrival they discovered a camp fire and five lads swimming in their underwear in stagnant water.

Watch commander Andy Morgan said crews told the youngsters – thought to be aged around 13 – to get out of the water, which was up to their chests in depth.

"In light of what's happened recently with people getting killed, everyone needs to understand that there are dangers in still or moving water," he said.

"It seems that no matter what warnings we put out to do with the dangers of water, people just aren't taking our advice.

"The calmest of water is still very much a danger.

"My concern was that there were young lads – aged about 13 or 14 – wading around in a disused pool. And at that time of night nonetheless," he added.
