The Co-operative has been given the go-ahead to transform the Cedar Tree building in Walsall Wood Road to move from its existing location nearby.

A planning application to create a new shop front and doors as part of the proposals was agreed by Walsall Council under delegated powers.Aldridge and South councillor John Rochelle, said: "I am fully in favour, it is a shame that so many pubs are closing, so many things have affected them.

"But the Co-op there is a suitable use, we have got to encourage business."

The Co-operative said it had outgrown its existing branch, in Walsall Wood Road, and planned to move into the nearby derelict Cedar Tree. It is not yet known whether the move will create any new jobs.

Helen Seed, spokeswoman for The Co-operative Food, said the existing store was too small to serve the community as well as they would wish.

"We plan to give Aldridge the best food store that The Co-operative has to offer, and our new outlet will be larger, with a much wider range of products," she added.

It comes after a new pub opened its doors, creating 50 jobs. The old Avion Cinema and bingo hall was transformed in Anchor Road to create the JD Wetherspoon pub.
