Petition launched over Bloxwich crematorium
A petition has been launched in Bloxwich against controversial plans for a new crematorium at nearby woodland.
Concerns have been raised about the development in Broad Lane, Essington, near to the border of the Mossley estate.
South Staffordshire Council has identified part of the 39-acre woodland site for the scheme, which will cater for 1,600 cremations every year.
Bloxwich councillor Louise Harrison has launched a petition against the plans which have led to a series of complaints.
She said: "South Staffordshire Council has announced plans to dispose of land that borders the Mossley estate to a company that specialises in crematoriums.
"This facility will be in close proximity to Abbey primary school. I do worry about the impact this will have on the young children that attend the school.
"This age group are very impressionable, what effect would seeing funeral cars day in day out have on their lives? "Also how will this building with its high chimney stack change the views of the area? The land is currently open green space that defines the border between Bloxwich and Essington."
Fellow Bloxwich councillor Fred Westley added he was concerned about a lack of consultation in his ward about the proposals. The first time many people in the area were aware of the proposal was when it was reported in the Express & Star.
