Petition backs The Public against college plans
The managing director of The Public said she has been "humbled" by the support of 5,000 people after a petition was handed to Sandwell Council bosses against plans to turn it into a sixth-form college.
The 5,000-signature petition, calling for 'The Public to remain as a valuable community, cultural and learning resource for everyone', was organised by apprentices from the LearnPlay Foundation, a tenant at the New Street venue.
It was handed over at Sandwell Council House in Oldbury yesterday.
Ms Saunders said: "We have been touched and humbled by the support.
"It shows that lots of people have taken the Public to their hearts. They can see the benefits to their families and members of the wider community. The people who come to the Public are not just spending money here. They are spending money in town too. The building is contributing to the wider economy."
Sandwell College wants to take over the arts centre in West Bromwich, which opened in 2008, and provide places for 500 A-level students. Talks are continuing to take place between the council and the college. A final decision is due to be made by late summer in order for the sixth form to open in September 2014.
