Man hit by Toyota and killed in Wolverhampton appeared drunk, inquest told
A man appeared to be drunk when he walked out into a Wolverhampton road and was killed by a car, an inquest was told.
Gurmukh Singh died when he was hit by a Toyota Starlet in Cannock Road two years ago. The 49-year-old suffered a serious head injury and later died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
An inquest into his death held yesterday heard that the driver of the car – Qasif Hussain – may have been driving up to 50mph in a 30mph zone, but police could not affirm how fast he was going.
Mr Singh – a labourer by trade who also lived in Cannock Road – had stepped off the kerb of the central reservation in Cannock Road and was hit by the car on July 11, 2011. Driver Mr Hussain attended the inquest and said: "When I got closer he just jumped at the side on my car.
"I stopped straightaway. The front of my car wasn't damaged, just the side."
Kyrstie Street estimated Mr Hussain's speed to be at around 50mph and added: "He (Mr Singh) was swaying across the road." Fellow eyewitness Hayley Ingram added: "He seemed drunk."
Dr Manel Mangulika, a pathologist at New Cross Hospital, said that Mr Singh had 350 milligrams of alcohol in his system, which was a 'fairly large' amount.
Black Country coroner Andrew Thompson concluded that the cause of death was a head injury caused by the accident.
