Cyclist suffers serious injuries as spate of Black Country collisions bring chaos

A cyclist suffered serious head injuries and leg fractures in a road smash which was one of a spate of crashes across the region.

Police were forced to close the road, just off Brierley Hill High Street, following the accident between a bicycle and a car.

Residents living, in Moor Street, heard a bang at around 8pm on Saturday and rushed outside to see the aftermath of the accident.

Paramedics rushed to the scene in Moor Street shortly afterwards as residents began tending to the cyclist.

Crews treated a man, aged in his 30s, for serious head injuries and leg fractures.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said the man was immobilised using a neck collar, spinal board and leg splint and anaesthetised.

He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

The woman driver of the car was treated for minor injuries and taken to Dudley's Russells Hall Hospital for assessment.

The road remained closed into the evening while investigations into the accident continued.

Meanwhile, emergency services attended an accident early yesterday morning on a stretch of motorway near West Bromwich.

Paramedics and police were called to the southbound carriage just before junction one for the M5 to deal with the crash.

The incident was cleared by around 10am.

In the early hours of yesterday a woman was taken to hospital after hitting a wall at a pub in Wolverhampton.

The Fiesta hit the brick work on the car park of the Cleveland Arms, in Stowheath Lane, Moseley Village,at around 3am.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s and to have been travelling alone, was taken to hospital after crews from Fallings Park fire station removed the rear seats from the damaged vehicle.

The victim is understood to have lost consciousness after the impact.

She was taken to New Cross Hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not known but they are not thought to be life threatening.

Staff at the pub said they had been told to make no comment while police inquiries into the incident continue.
