Restaurant plans in for derelict West Bromwich nightclub
A derelict West Bromwich nightclub could be turned into a restaurant under plans which would create eight full time jobs.
Developers want to transform the former Club Nytro in Lombard Street West and bring it back into use.
A planning application for the scheme has now been submitted to Sandwell Council. Planning documents state the building – which was targeted by arsonists in 2008 – is in a poor state of repair and needs completely modernising.
A design and access statement lodged with the council from planning agent Amrik Chana from The Architectural Consultancy Ltd in Moseley, who is acting on behalf of applicant Jaswant Singh, from Handsworth, states: "At present the building looks very drab; any work to improve the building will add life to the building and improve the surrounding area.
"The client owns the adjoining building and wishes to incorporate the building into his new use. The ground floor of the building will be used for quick afternoon lunch's buffet style and the first floor for staff accommodation for both buildings."
The report adds: "At present the building is empty and falling into disrepair. My client is looking to invest money create jobs and stop the building from falling into disrepair. This can only add value to the building and the area.
"The client owns the adjoining building, but has very basic staff facilities. The client is looking to provide better staff facilities and more storage facilities. He is also looking to provide a different style of restaurant, offering quick lunches and evening meals.
"The building at present is totally dilapidated. The client is looking to totally modernise the building and provide better staff facilities."
If approved the restaurant would be open from 12 noon until midnight every day. In 2009 plans were drawn up to turn the nightclub into offices and a tea shop.
The club was badly damaged in an arson attack in 2008. The venue was closed and empty at the time and no-one was injured. It was thought at the time the blaze could have caused up to £10,000 damage. All the wiring for the PA system and lighting had melted with plastic dripping onto the seats. Damage was also caused to the main dance area.
If plans are approved it will be the latest restaurant business to open in the town. In April, the Three Kings restaurant opened at the former Bar Cuba, above Shaftesbury Casino in High Street, after a £500,000 refurbishment, creating 20 jobs.
The restaurant will offer Indian, Mexican, Chinese and Italian cuisine.
