West Bromwich Albion defender Gabriel Tamas was today preparing a court bid to return to England after being ordered to stay in Romania for 30 days following his arrest.

The 29-year-old has been banned from leaving the country while prosecutors consider their next move after he was arrested on Friday following an incident at a Bucharest apartment block.

Tamas has the right to appeal to a court against the ban and his agent today confirmed he was in contact with lawyers over their next move.

Tamas spent 10 hours at a police station on Friday following his arrest after allegedly being found drunk at the apartment block following a night out.

Agent Florin Manea said: "He's with his family in Brasov, where it's quiet. He's sorry for everything that happened. Let's see what happens with the prohibition to leave the country when we meet with lawyers."

Tamas was caught on video by a CCTV camera smashing his way through a door to gain entry to the apartment block early on Friday. He was then shown making his way upstairs.

Police claimed they found him asleep, face down on the first floor in an 'advanced state of intoxication' and claiming he did not know how he got into the building.

He spent much of Friday at a police station in the Romanian capital. Reports said he had declined to make a statement.

Today, Mr Manea promised that his client would pay for the damage at the building.

"Certainly he will pay for the damage to the door that was broken and try to stay out of trouble because, after the ban, he must return to England," said Mr Manea.

"We do not want to extend the prohibition to leave Romania."

Albion have begun their own investigation into the incident, which happened a day before Tamas was due to report for international duty with Romania.

Tamas joined the club in 2010 and has a year remaining on his contract.
