Police today said there had been high-visibility patrols in the town centre for the past few days in a bid to reassure communities.

They said there had been reports of a 'suspicious incident' in the town centre yesterday but no criminal offences took place.

Cannock police commander Ch Insp Carl Ratcliffe said: "We have had high-visibility patrols across our town centres for the past couple of days to help keep our communities reassured.

"These patrols include a small number from our armed response team, whose normal day-to-day role is to support visible policing with routine duties when they are not required for their specific role.

"Officers responded to the report of a suspicious incident in Cannock town centre and as a result of their investigations we quickly established that there were no criminal offences and the officers resumed their patrols."
