Passers-by rush to aid of siblings after Wolverhampton crash

Neighbours have told how onlookers rushed to help after a teacher and her brother were hit by a car the day before her wedding.

The siblings were struck on Stubbs Road in Penn Fields, Wolverhampton, as they were preparing to set off for the celebrations, which were taking place in the north of England.

Residents and passers by rushed to help in the wake of the crash, which happened at 11.40am on Thursday.

Susan Tivey, a retired nursery nurse who lives on Chequerfield Drive, said: "They had been loading the car up when another one crashed into the back of them, I heard.

"She was speaking normally but she was in shock.

"She told me she was getting married in Lancashire. I had to help pick her wedding dress off the floor.

"She had leg injuries but she was more concerned about her brother because he was in and out of consciousness on the street.

"There was another lady helping who, fortunately, had just recently passed her first-aid diploma."

Another resident Dorothy Clifford, aged 89, added: "She was getting married. The mother told me, she came to my door and said, 'It's my daughter.' I feel just dreadful about it.

"It's awful. I've never seen so many policeman and people with yellow tops on.

"It was marvellous how they tended to them."

Kate Clark, who has worked at several schools in the city, was airlifted from the scene of the crash to the regional trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for specialist treatment after suffering from leg injuries.

However she was released yesterday afternoon.

Her 32-year-old brother Tim, who lives in Lanesfield, is expected to remain at New Cross Hospital for several days while undergoing further treatment.

West Midlands Police say they are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The ambulance service says no one else was injured in the crash.

The road was shut off for several hours while paramedics worked at the scene.
