Adrian Chiles apologises over Peter Odemwingie

TV presenter Adrian Chiles has telephoned rebel striker Peter Odemwingie to apologise for calling him a 't**t' at West Brom's awards evening.

Life-long Baggies fan Chiles, 46, from Hagley, joked at the dinner at Birmingham's ICC last week that the 'tweet of the year' award for the striker should be renamed 't**t of the year'.

The four-letter insult left guests and club staff gobsmacked. And Albion boss Steve Clarke blasted Chiles for his comment, branding it "stupid".

It has now emerged Chiles telephoned Odemwingie on Friday – five days after the awards dinner – but the Nigerian is understood to be unhappy with how long it took to say sorry.

Odemwingie's future at the club is looking increasingly precarious after he was fined two weeks' wages for a series of attacks on the club on Twitter.

The former Locomotiv Moscow player was also involved in a bust-up with a fan during Albion's 3-2 defeat to Wigan at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Odemwingie was criticised by a supporter while he spoke to his wife, Sarah, who was with their four-month-old son sat in the West Stand.

As he warmed up he was also booed and he was the subject of obscene chants from fans. Clarke admitted after the game the crowd reaction prompted him to leave Odemwingie on the bench.

That followed another fine of two weeks' wages for driving to Queens Park Rangers' ground Loftus Road in January in an attempt to force through a move to QPR.

The total fines are believed to be in the region of £160,000.

Odemwingie, who has a year left on his contract, held a meeting with PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor, Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins and technical director Richard Garlick last week and said he thought it best that both parties go their separate ways this summer.

The issue of Chiles's comment was also discussed.

QPR had a £2m offer rejected for the 31-year-old in January and their relegation to the Championship means a move there is unlikely.
