Hundreds turn out as stars of West Bromiwch are honoured

More than 200 people attended a glittering awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of local people and organisations.

A total of 50 finalists across a range of categories were thanked for time they have given to the community at the West Bromwich Community Recognition Awards.

The event, organised by Sandwell Council's towns and neighbourhoods team and local councillors, was held at West Bromwich Town Hall on Friday.

Liam Biddle, aged 11, and Bradley Foster, aged 13 , were two of the youngsters who were presented with the young persons award at the ceremony by Paul Ramsey from McDonald's. The youngsters volunteer with the Cre-8 group on the Yew Tree estate.

In addition to these awards town leaders also presented a number of special contribution awards, which saw the recipients receive a special engraved crystal plaque.

Amongst those to receive this award was Carol Hartill who is secretary of the Friends of Dartmouth Park group, for her work on the restoration project at the Lloyd Street park.

Ann Poynton and Rita Hicken were also given the award for their work setting up the Yew Tree estate young people's group the Sunshine Club. Black Country historian Terry Price was presented with a special contribution award for his research, and Margaret Whitehouse was given her award for her work on the Charlemont farm estate.

Teenager Saffron Hicken was presented with the young persons special contribution award for establishing the Cre-8 young persons group of the Yew Tree estate whilst Callum Jones who is an under 17s West Bromwich Albion and England player was given an award for his work as an ambassador for Salter Sports at George Salter Academy in West Bromwich.

The community radio station Raj FM was also honoured.
