Ivy House in Wolverhampton Road was due to be knocked down under proposals from Staffordshire County Council including apartments, a doctors surgery and cafe.

But the authority has temporarily withdrawn its plans for the 143-year-old former workhouse and hospital after more than 1,000 residents signed a petition against the proposal.

County councillor Pat Corfield said it would allow more time to discuss the wider proposals with the community.
