2,500 applications for 22 jobs at Merry Hill DFS
More than 100 people competed for each job up for grabs at a new furniture store due to open at Merry Hill shopping centre later this month.
The DFS store at the centre's retail park will create 22 new jobs – but bosses received applications from 2,497 jobseekers.
The sofa retailer will open in The Boulevard at the Brierley Hill complex on March 29.
DFS regional manager, Adam Hankinson, said the company had recruited locally.
He said: "I'm looking forward to the opening as we've recruited a great bunch of people from the local community."
The Black Country Skills Shop at Merry Hill shopping centre helps match businesses looking for workers with jobseekers.
Today, shop manager Tina Dazell said: "The company may have advertised on its website and people will have been able to apply electronically – so you may have had a large number of people from a wide area applying very quickly without giving much thought.
"DFS is also a recognisable store and I'm sure it is attractive for anyone looking for a job."
The 17,000 sq ft store was previously occupied by Comet. The electrical retailer moved out in September last year.
Latest figures show unemployment in the West Midlands is at 238,000.
