Action plan to tackle Cannock street's flood problem

A flood-hit street in Cannock could get a new drainage system and be cleaned more often after a successful meeting between residents and environmental chiefs.

People living in Heathbank Drive, Huntington, last year set up a group to try to solve the problem they have every time there is heavy rain.

The problem results in their homes, gardens and the street being submerged in water. But following a meeting with Staffordshire County Council, Severn Trent Water and the Environment Agency, an action plan has now been drawn up.

Organiser of the Heathbank and Teddesley Flood Action Group, teacher David Wood, said he hoped the problem would eventually be solved.

"The meeting was really positive and we wanted to make clear all the issues we have been having," he said. "But they came and said they would help us, by setting up a street cleaning programme so our street is cleaned more than the scheduled once a year to now perhaps once a month."

Residents have had to set up their own sandbags and clean-up processes to cope with the flooding. Firefighters have also been called on several occasions to help clear water. Mr Wood said they had been told the council would apply for money so new drainage could be built but this would take a number of years to come through.

Transport and highways councillor Mike Maryon said: "The residents in Heathbank Drive have been really proactive in trying to tackle this problem. The water is coming off private farmland, bringing silt and other debris from the fields, and we have also been in discussions with the farmer to try to find a solution to this complex problem."
