They may claim Everything is Average Nowadays but Wolverhampton had cause to disagree as the band hit the city on a whistle-stop tour of the UK.

Fresh from touring the country as The Artilleryman in War of the Worlds, lead singer Ricky Wilson went back to his roots and led the charge in a wild, energy-fuelled night which had the whole venue on its feet and singing.

From the moments the band hit the stage with sing-along Thank You Very Much, Ricky had the crowd eating out of his hand. Newer songs such as Little Shocks received as rousing a reception as classics Everyday I Love You Less and Less, I Predict a Riot and Ruby.

At one point Wilson performed his party trick, clambering up the speakers to sing from the balcony of the Civc. Wilson, who has broken both his rib and ankle while performing in the past, also performed a stage dive into the crowd.

Energy levels in the room reached a climax as the band left the stage on The Angry Mob.

Ending on a more poignant note, the encore began with the ballad Saying Goodbye followed by a cover of The Stranglers' No More Heroes and ending on the customary Oh My God, the first song that was ever released into mainstream distribution by the band.

Maybe they didn't believe that they were so far from home, but the merry folk of Wolverhampton were glad they came.
