Crackdown on road signs in Wolverhampton streets
Road signs are being removed in Wolverhampton as part of a bid to de-clutter city streets and stop drivers getting distracted by so many directions.
Council bosses are asking residents to highlight which signs they think are no-longer needed as part of the project.
A number of redundant signs or signposts have already been taken out from locations around Wolverhampton, as well as a handful of temporary signs which officials say have remained in situ long after they were needed.
The de-cluttering scheme has been launched by the local authority to help improve safety as well as the look of the city.
Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council's cabinet member for economic regeneration and prosperity, said: "As well as being unsightly and spoiling the natural environment, having too many signs dotted around poses a safety risk as they can be very confusing for drivers and pedestrians.
"In addition, having too many signs in one area, or too much information on one post – dilutes the more important messages to drivers.
"We've already started to address the issue and over the next few months we'll continue to remove redundant signs and posts in and around our city centre and town centres and on all major routes throughout Wolverhampton."
He added: "We would welcome suggestions from members of the public about unnecessary or confusing signage." Anyone who would like to report a sign or post which they think is no longer needed is asked to call City Direct on 01902 551155, email city.direct@wolverhampton.gov.uk or tweet @wolvesdirect
